How to find your Rising sign (and why your birth time matters so much)

October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

"And what's your Rising sign?" The question comes up all the time, and for good reason: after your Sun sign, the Rising sign (or Ascendant) is the most personal point in your birth chart. Here is how to calculate it correctly, and what it says about you.

What is the Rising sign?

The Rising sign is the degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact place and moment of your birth. As the Earth turns, all twelve signs pass over the horizon in twenty-four hours: the Rising sign therefore changes sign roughly every two hours, and degree every four minutes.

It is also the starting point of the 1st house, the house of personality and appearance. Every other house in your chart follows from it.

How to calculate it

With these three details, the calculation is instant. Our free tool does it at the top of the home page, together with your Sun and Moon.

Why a few minutes can change everything

If you were born close to a change of sign, a ten-minute error is enough to switch from one Rising sign to the next. It happens often: a time rounded to the half hour, or remembered by a relative, can be misleading.

Our engine automatically tests your birth time fifteen minutes either side. If the Rising sign changes within that window, we tell you at which minute, so you know which reading applies.

What your Rising sign reveals

What if I don't know my birth time?

Without a time, the Rising sign remains unknown, but the chart is still rich: the positions of the planets, their signs and their aspects do not depend on the time (except the Moon, which can change sign during the day). We explain everything in our article on unknown birth times.
