Free birth chart: how to calculate it and read it
Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It takes seconds to calculate, as long as you know three things: your date, time and place of birth. Here is how to get it for free and, more importantly, how to start reading it.
What a birth chart really is
A birth chart (or natal chart) shows where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were in the twelve signs of the zodiac, and how they fall into twelve sectors called houses. These positions are astronomical facts: they are calculated to the degree using ephemerides, the tables that describe how the planets move.
Astrology then reads these positions as a symbolic map of your personality and of the major cycles in your life. Its predictive value has not been scientifically demonstrated, but many people find it a valuable tool for thinking about their choices.
The three things you need
- Your date of birth: it sets the position of the Sun (your sign) and of the slow planets.
- Your time of birth: it determines the Rising sign and the houses. The sky turns about one degree every four minutes, which is why precision matters.
- Your place of birth: it gives the latitude, the longitude and, above all, the time zone in force that day, daylight saving time included.
The core trio: Sun, Moon, Rising
For a first reading, three points are enough to sketch the essentials. The Sun describes your core identity and what drives you. The Moon speaks of your inner needs, your sensitivity and what makes you feel safe. The Rising sign (or Ascendant), the sign rising on the horizon when you were born, colors the way you approach the world and the first impression you make.
That is why two people with the same Sun sign can be so different: their Moons and Rising signs change everything. You can calculate your trio for free at the top of our home page, in under a minute.
Reading your chart step by step
- Find the signs of your trio and read what they suggest: a Sun in Aries and a Moon in Cancer do not experience emotions in the same way.
- Look at the houses your planets fall in: the area of life involved (work, relationships, money, home) matters as much as the sign.
- Note the aspects, the angles between planets: flowing (trines, sextiles) or challenging (squares, oppositions), they describe your strengths and your challenges.
- Look for dominants: a strongly represented element (fire, earth, air, water) or sign sets the overall tone of the chart.
Why accurate calculation matters
Many online tools settle for an approximation, or even let an artificial intelligence "guess" the positions, which produces errors. At Astronela, every position is calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrologers, together with the historical time zone of your birthplace.
We even check whether your birth time falls close to a change of Rising sign: a few minutes can then change the reading, and we tell you so.
Going further: forecasts
Your natal chart describes who you are. Transits, the movement of today's planets over the points of your chart, describe the major periods ahead: favorable moments, turning points, times to be careful. They are the heart of our reports, which analyze every single month of the period you choose, over 1, 3 or 5 years, for your career or your love life.
